Sources & Method

Updated

This page sets out how an event gets into AsiaGulf Wire, where the facts come from, and what we do when one of them turns out to be wrong. The publisher, AsiaGulf Wire, answers for all of it.

What counts as a corridor deal

An event goes in when one party is based or backed in the Gulf (the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain or Oman), the other is based or backed in East, South-East or South Asia, and money or a binding commitment is involved: an investment, an acquisition, a commitment to a fund, a joint platform, a fund close. Capital can run either way. A memorandum of intent with no money attached, a visit, or a statement of ambition is not a deal and is not counted, although it may appear as context.

Where each figure is taken from

  • Government agencies and regulators.
  • Exchange filings and company disclosures.
  • Company and fund registers.
  • The public announcements of the parties themselves.
  • The published records of other news outlets, used only as a pointer to where to look and never as the source of a figure.

We do not use leaked or private documents, and we do not list sources that we cannot name. When an item has no primary document, it says so in plain words. When the terms were not disclosed, it says that too.

How we count

  • One deal is counted once, on the date of its first public announcement. Later steps (signing, completion) are added to the same entry.
  • A figure is shown in the currency the source uses, with a conversion only when we state the rate and the date.
  • A commitment, an amount actually invested and an amount under management are three different things. We name which one a number is.
  • A number that has a cut-off date carries it, as "as of" followed by the date: the date the data refers to.
  • The Friday digest gives a count for the week and a short list headed "Not counted this week", with the reason for each exclusion.

Publishing mode

The Friday digest is the fixed part of the site. Short daily items run alongside it when the weekly count of corridor deals supports them. The count is reviewed weekly during the first weeks after launch, and this page is changed when the mode changes.

Checking and bylines

Names, amounts and dates are checked against the primary document where one exists. Items carry the byline "Editorial team". Software may help with drafting or sorting records; the publisher answers for every published piece.

Independence

The editors alone decide what runs. Nobody outside the editors signs off a piece. The site carries no advertising and no sponsored material, so no payment affects whether a deal is included; see About the Wire.

Corrections

When we get something wrong we correct it in the text and add a note beginning "Corrected" with the date and what the text said before. We do not change facts silently and we do not take an article down to hide an error.

  • A factual error (a wrong party, amount, date or claim) is corrected with a dated note.
  • A misleading omission is fixed by a clarification with a note.
  • Outdated data is updated together with its "as of" date, or the item is marked as no longer current.
  • A typo that does not change the meaning is fixed without a note.

To report a mistake, send the link, the sentence you think is wrong and, if you have one, a source showing the right figure, through Tips & contact. A correction is made once an editor has checked the report against the source. Each request to remove an item is considered individually; no automatic removal is promised, and errors are corrected with a note.
