MGX’s data-centre deals on record sit in the Americas and France; Asia is unconfirmed

MGX closed Fund I at $49 billion and completed the Aligned Data Centers deal at about $40 billion; neither document names an Asian data-centre asset.

MGX confirmed the final close of MGX Fund I at $49 billion in total commitments on 1 July 2026, against an initial target of $45 billion. On 21 July 2026 AIP, MGX and GIP completed their purchase of Aligned Data Centers at an enterprise value of approximately $40 billion. Neither document names an Asian data-centre asset. The only reported route to one is AIP’s talks for Stack’s Asia Pacific portfolio, which no party has published.

Fund I: what the release states

  • What size, what date, whose money? MGX Fund I closed at $49 billion in total commitments, above the $45 billion target, in a release dated 1 July 2026. The release says investors are institutional and private, from the Gulf, North America, Asia and Europe. It lists no LP names, no LP count and no split by region. A complete answer from MGX investor relations is a regional breakdown of the $49 billion, with Asian commitments stated as a dollar figure.
  • Is Fund I still open? The release confirms a final close. An Asian sponsor seeking Fund I capital is therefore addressing a closed vehicle. The release describes no successor fund. Ask which route (co-investment, AIP or a later fund) can take new capital, and request the terms in writing.
  • What does the mandate cover? Fund I invests across the AI technology stack: semiconductors, AI infrastructure, and AI and AI-enabling platforms. Data centres fall under AI infrastructure by category. The release sets no geographic limit and no allocation range. Request regional allocation ranges from the fund documents.
  • How concentrated is the portfolio? The release says the fund has invested in 14 companies since inception. It does not list them or say how many are data-centre platforms. Ask for the number of platforms and the capital committed to each.

Aligned: what the close records

  • What closed, when, from whom? The consortium acquired 100% of the equity in Aligned Data Centers on 21 July 2026. The sellers were private infrastructure funds managed by Macquarie Asset Management and its co-invest partners. The release puts enterprise value at approximately $40 billion.
  • Where are the assets? The release states 51 campuses across Northern Virginia, Chicago, Dallas, Ohio, Phoenix and Salt Lake City, plus São Paulo, Querétaro and Santiago. It adds more than 6.4 GW of operational and planned capacity. No campus is in Asia, so this deal adds no Asian capacity to MGX’s record.
  • What fresh capital followed? At closing the consortium committed an additional $5 billion of growth capital for Aligned’s expansion. The release does not split that sum, or the $40 billion, among AIP, MGX and GIP. A complete answer is each member’s share of both figures in dollars.

AIP: structure and geography

  • Who built it, and to what target? The AI Infrastructure Partnership was established in September 2024 by BlackRock, GIP, MGX and Microsoft. It was created to help mobilise $30 billion of equity capital, with potential to reach up to $100 billion including debt. The Aligned release calls that deal AIP’s first investment.
  • Where may it invest? The September 2024 launch release says investments will be chiefly in the United States, with the remainder in US partner countries. It does not list those countries. An Asian asset has to fit inside that remainder, so ask AIP for the written definition of "partner countries".
  • Who else has joined? In June 2025 the Kuwait Investment Authority joined AIP as the first non-founder financial anchor investor. The release gives no ticket size and no terms. Asian allocators should ask whether further anchor seats exist and on what terms.
  • Is MGX the same exposure as AIP? The Aligned release names AIP, MGX and GIP as separate members of the consortium. MGX therefore holds exposure both as an AIP founder and as a direct member. Ask which line would carry an Asian asset, and the percentage held, in writing.

The Asia item: what is and is not on record

  • What is reported? AIP and IFM Investors are reported to be in exclusive talks for Stack Infrastructure’s Asia Pacific data centres. The reported valuation is up to $25 billion, an estimate and not a price. No closing date or signed agreement has been announced.
  • What does the target publish? Stack’s Asia Pacific page headlines 470 MW, 4 campuses and 81 acres. The market listing on the same page shows 432 MW for Melbourne (two sites) and 360 MW for Sydney (one site). The figures do not reconcile on the page. A bidder or LP should request a schedule of operational, under-construction and planned MW by site.
  • Is MGX named as a bidder? No announcement names MGX in the Stack process. Reports describe AIP as the bidder. MGX’s role follows only from its AIP membership. A complete answer is written confirmation of whether MGX participates and at what share.

Other MGX data-centre exposure

  • Stargate. MGX is one of four initial equity funders, alongside SoftBank, OpenAI and Oracle. OpenAI’s announcement says the project intends to invest $500 billion over four years in AI infrastructure for OpenAI in the United States. The stated geography is the US. MGX’s share is not given in that document.
  • France. MGX’s news page carries a 2 June 2026 headline: Bpifrance, Mistral and MGX to expand Campus AI across France, to deliver a 3 GW network of AI factories. The news highlights block shows that item, the Aligned close and a Databricks round. It shows no Asian data-centre item.

Requests to put in writing

  • Vehicle and route. Ask MGX which entity would hold an Asian co-investment: MGX Fund I, MGX directly, or AIP. The release for each names different parties.
  • Numbers. Request the regional split of Fund I, each member’s share of Aligned and of the $5 billion, and AIP’s partner-country list. None appears in the releases.
  • Timing. No published document gives a decision date for any Asian transaction. Ask for the process timetable before committing sponsor resources.

Why it matters for the corridor: The published record places MGX’s data-centre capital in the Americas (Aligned, Stargate) and France, while Fund I’s investors include Asian LPs. AIP’s launch release set a US-first mandate, so any Asian asset or co-investor enters through the "partner countries" remainder.

Editorial assessment

  • Asian capital appears on the fund side of MGX’s record, as an LP source. Asian assets do not yet appear on the asset side.
  • If the Stack talks are confirmed, they would be the first Asian asset in AIP’s disclosed record. Until a primary statement exists, treat them as unconfirmed.
  • Missing splits (regional allocation, member shares of the $5 billion) are the main gap. Fundraisers should ask for these as figures, not descriptions.
